The Strawberry Lipped Conch, also known as: Orange Lip Conch, Sand Tiger Conch, Strawberry Conch, Tiger Conch, is a highly effective and attractive addition to any reef aquarium’s clean-up crew. With its beautiful mottled white and orange shell and striking pink or orange interior, this marine gastropod brings both function and flair to your tank. Known for their excellent sand-sifting capabilities, these conchs work tirelessly to aerate your substrate and consume unwanted detritus, algae, and even nuisance pests like bristle worms and cyanobacteria. This conch sports a thick, whorled shell that is primarily white with orange or tan mottling. Inside, the vivid colouration continues with a bold orange or pink interior and a dark inner lip. These snails are also notable for their regenerative stalked eyes, giving them surprisingly keen vision for a mollusk, aiding in both food detection and predator awareness. Natural Habitat & Distribution In the wild, these critters are found throughout Indo-Pacific regions, commonly inhabiting shallow sandy lagoons and reef flats. They tend to move in small groups, grazing across sandy bottoms in search of detritus and algae. Why Keep a Strawberry Lipped Conch? The Strawberry Lipped Conch is an excellent addition to any reef tank thanks to its combination of functionality and visual appeal. As a natural sand cleaner, it continuously sifts and turns the substrate, preventing compaction and promoting a healthy, oxygenated sandbed. Its diet includes nuisance algae, detritus, diatoms, and leftover food, making it a valuable member of the clean-up crew. Being both a detritivore and an omnivore, it helps reduce organic waste while controlling unwanted organisms in the tank. Peaceful and entirely reef-safe, this non-aggressive invertebrate is perfect for community aquariums. On top of its utility, its vibrant colors, unusual movement, and striking appearance make it a beautiful and engaging presence in any display. Taxonomy Strawberry Lipped Conch belong to the class Gastropoda. A gastropod is a type of mollusk that includes snails and slugs, both marine and terrestrial. They are characterized by a muscular foot used for movement, a head with sensory organs, and often a coiled shell (though some lack a shell entirely). Gastropods move using a gliding motion and typically have a radula—a specialized feeding organ with tiny teeth used to scrape or cut food. They are one of the most diverse groups of animals, found in nearly every environment on Earth. These helpful critter also belong to the family Strombidae, commonly known as true conchs. This is a group of marine gastropod mollusks recognized for their distinctively shaped, often large and thick shells with flared outer lips. Strombids are unique among snails for their unusual leaping locomotion, achieved with a modified foot, and for having well-developed eyes on stalks, giving them surprisingly good vision for invertebrates. They are mostly herbivores or detritivores, feeding on algae and organic debris. Keeping Them Healthy To keep Strawberry Lipped Conch in top condition, house them in a mature, stable aquarium with low nitrate levels and no copper-based treatments. In addition to natural algae, their diet can be supplemented with dried seaweed, meaty foods or algae wafers if food becomes scarce. Suitable Tank Mates Strawberry Lipped Conch are peaceful and reef-safe, coexisting well with corals, other invertebrates, and most reef fish. Avoid housing them with aggressive or snail eating species such as some wrasses, puffers, triggers and some larger, aggressive crabs that may damage or consume them. How Many Should Be Kept. A small group of these critters is usually sufficient to maintain a clean tank alongside other members of the clean up crew. The exact number can vary based on the size and maturity of the tank.
