Aqua One’s blue filter foam serves a very specific purpose in your canister filter. It is situated in the top tray of the filter and is much finer than the media that precede it. The smaller pore size means that finer particles of waste are trapped where they can be broken down by a large culture of friendly bacteria. The coarser media below trap the larger solids so the black pad doesn’t become easily choked and can deal with even tiny ‘bits’ leaving your set up with a very clear, healthy look. The coarse, blue, foam pores do compress over time and can reduce the overall filter flow rate so do change the blue foam pad in your Ocellaris 850 canister filter every six months or so with a regular, monthly rinse out in aquarium water in between to keep it working well.
