Ultra Crocea Cultured Clam

$30.49 $59.46
The Crocea Cultured Clam, Tridacna Crocea, also known as the Boring Clam, is a prized addition to saltwater reef aquariums for its spectacular colouration and relative hardiness. This is the smallest species of giant clam, reaching up to roughly 6inches at most. Appearance. Crocea Clams boast vivid and variable mantle colourations that are often adorned with iridescent and intricate marbling or stripes throughout. These exact colour is determined by both their natural origin and aquaculture conditions. As environmental condition have a hand in controlling their appearance, there can be a lot of variation in a population. There colours can also change overtime, in response to changing conditions. Please note that the images displayed on our website are intended as a guide only. We have done our utmost to provide the closest representation possible for this critter, to help give an idea of what to expect. Clams can exhibit significant variation in colour and appearance due to a range of environmental and genetic factors. For example, the following are a few examples of conditions that can influence how corals look: Lighting: The brand, spectrum, intensity, and duration of light play a major role in how corals display their colours. Transit: Clams may change colour after being moved. They may either regain their original appearance or adapt to suit their new environment. Water Chemistry: Elements such as pH, salinity, and trace minerals can subtly or significantly alter a coral’s appearance. Nutrition: The availability and type of nutrients can affect both colouration and growth. Natural Distribution & Habitat. Native to the Indo and Western Pacific region, including the Japan, Australia and Fiji. Tridacna Crocea thrives in shallow, sunlit reef environments, attached or embedded in hard substrates, thanks to their ability to bore (drill) themselves into the reef. Why Keep a Crocea Cultured Clam? In reef aquariums, the Crocea Clam is admired for both its beauty and biological function. It acts as a natural filter feeder, helping to improve water clarity by consuming suspended particulates and plankton. Aquacultured Crocea Clams are particularly desirable, being both environmentally sustainable and better acclimated to tank conditions than wild-caught specimens. Care Requirements Lighting:Crocea Cultured Clams house symbiotic zooxanthellae algae in their tissues, which require strong lighting to photosynthesize and provide essential nutrients. Meaning they need good lighting and thoughtful placement. Placement:Ideal placement is on a sandy substrate or a shallow rock ledge at the tank bottom, with the mantle positioned perpendicular to the light source to maximize exposure. Clams can be moved up slowly over time, but should not be repositioned frequently. Avoid placing them in tight crevices or areas with high flow, as this may prevent them from opening fully or filter feeding effectively. Feeding:Crocea Cultured Clam derive alot of their nutrition from light, but they benefit from supplemental feedings of phytoplankton, rotifers, and microplankton. Tank Mates:Choose peaceful tank mates. Avoid species known to nip at clam mantles, such as large angelfish, some wrasses, butterflyfish. Keep Crocea Clams away from stinging corals with long sweeper tentacles as well. Reproduction. Crocea Cultured Clams are simultaneous hermaphrodites, possessing both male and female reproductive organs. They utilize broadcast spawning, releasing sperm followed by eggs into the water column to prevent self-fertilization. This process, often synchronized by moon cycles and environmental cues, is accompanied by the release of a chemical called SIS (Spawning Induced Substance), triggering nearby clams to spawn in unison. In aquaria, successful reproduction is extremely rare due to the fragility of eggs and larvae and the need for pristine water conditions. However, aquacultured specimens are widely available and preferable for their adaptability and ethical sourcing.
